Climbing in the region Hochsteiermark

For everybody, who wants to go up, the mountainous landscape of the Hochsteiermark offers an alpine playground: From high rope courses and via ferratas to the classics in the steep mountains.

Climbing in the region Hochsteiermark means silence, loneliness and nature experience near the cities Vienna and Graz and our eastern neighbours.

Climbing areas in the region

Eisenerz Alps
Climbing in this region means silence, loneliness and unknown routes. But the Eisenerz Alps offer also classic routes for climbers. Famous mountains like the Kaiserschild and the Eisenerzer Reichenstein, but also unknown summits like the mountain Hohe Lins will impress climbers.

To introduce the area of the mountain Hochschwab between Eisenerz and Seewiesen, Aflenzer Becken, Tragöß and Salzatal as a area for climbers would be as if you carry coals to Newcastle.
There alpine history was written, does not matter if from the famous roped party from Graz "Schinko Bischofberger", who climbed the Hochschwab  in the years of 1930 for the first time. The Hochschwab was known for the most difficult ascents in the alpine area. Another famous person was the first climber of the Eiger northern wall (Eiger Nordwand) Fritz Kasparek.

The Hochschwab offers more than 1000 climbing routes from easy to very difficult from secure to lonely and alpine. The decision for a holiday in the region is not diffiuclt, but the decision which route to take is not easy.

Gamseckwände und obere Kahlmäuer
When you search the total loneliness and long, but not too difficult ascents between the Styrian Rax and the Schneealm, then this is the right climbing tour for you. Unknown, often very old ascents you can find here, as well as heigths of the walls from 200 to 600m in alpine ambience (no climbing protection, partly also friable rocks!). A difficulty up to the level IV awaits all climbers and lovers of the loneliness.

Raxenmäuer Steirische Rax
Climbing high above the nature park Mürzer Oberland, one of the calmest places of the Rax. Alpine climbing garden with routes with the level of difficulty II.VIII. and height of the walls 30 200m. Nearly all starting points are marked.

Climbing garden in Mariazell
The climbing park Spielmäuer is a project of the "Naturfreunde Mariazell" and is located in Wegscheid, only 14 kilometers away from the main square in Mariazell. There you can ejnoy a fascinating climbing experience in the middle of the nature of the beautiful Mariazeller Land. The climbing park presents three via ferratas (B to D) and a climbing garden. The whole park is also great for climbing classes.

The level of difficulty is suitable for beginners, as well as for professionals. "Oliver's Mariazeller Steig" is leisurely in the sector B/C, you have the choice for the ascent via "Felix' Himmelsleiter" C/D with a little bit of thrill, because you have to climb via a rope ladder over an huge ledge.
A delightful via ferrata is "Tristan's Kirchbogensteig" with the levels of difficulty C/D, where you have to pass through a mystic cave, bevor you get to the wall of the summit and the ascent.

For everybody, who loves it a little bit more comfortable, a 2,5 hours long hiking tour to the Spielmäuer, passing by the legendary  "Teufelsbrücke", which is a natural monument since 2016 would be great. This bridge you can also pass at the descent from the via ferratas. Appointments for guided climbing tours with trained guided you can book via: +43 676 487 33 73 (Mr. Walter Egger).
