The basilica Mariazell with treasure-house and candle grotto

One of the most famous pilgrimage locations in Europe

Mariazell is located in the north of Styria and is one of the most famous pilgrimage locations in Austria and in Europe. Already from afar, you can see the basilica which has a very old history. For more than 900 years it is an attraction for thousands of pilgrims. The word basilica the church got during the renovation in the year 1907. The main church is a baroque church. Domenico Sciassia was an architect of the monastery St. Lambrecht and he was an important person during the main building and renovation. This renovation took place from 1992 t0 2007. During this time the main altar, four organs and the architecture inside and outside the church were renovated.

Especially worth seeing is the treasure-houses (north and south) of the pilgrimage church. There you can see votive gifts, miracle pictures, dresses of the Virgin Mary, carved pictures, and sculptures out of ivory, jewelry etc. The treasure-house picture is also known as second gift picture and invites to be silent and pray.

A special flair produces the candle grotto near the basilica. Here you have the possibility to commemorate the deceased's.

Opening hours:

Basilica: Daily from 08:00 a.m. to 08:00 p.m.
Treasure house (1st of May to the 26th of October): Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 03:00 p.m., Sunday and Holiday 11:00 a.m. to 03:00 p.m.

Especially for pilgrims from all over the world, Mariazell is a special place. There exists a huge network of pilgrimage paths to get on the pilgrimage path 06 to Mariazell. With a total length of 1.100 km, the paths lead from Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Kärnten and Styria to Mariazell. The path Mariazeller Gründerweg is also worth a walk. This path leads from the monastery Stift Lambrecht via Aflenz to Mariazell. This path has a total length of 192 km and can be walked in 7 stages.

In winter Mariazell is a top trip destination of the Hochsteiermark. The advent in Mariazell invites to enjoy the atmosphere and the view to the basilica. Regional delights like the gingerbread from the manufactory Pirker or various liquors and schnapses you can enjoy.

A special highlight before Christmas is a mechanic crib at the calvary in Mariazell. The crib is handmade and shows 12 scenes from the new testament with 130 figures who can be moved.
